These are the five things I learned from reading Romans 5, I have been justified by faith. Bible study for beginners-like me!

I learned this from reading Romans 5: I have been justified by faith.
These are the five things I learned from reading Romans 5, I have been justified by faith.

We can learn a lot from just reading the bible. For example, Romans, the letter Paul wrote to the church in Rome. This book teaches us a lot about God’s grace and the place of faith in our lives. It clearly tells me that I have been justified by faith. We don’t have to be Bible scholars to learn this. Here are five things I learned from Romans 5. There is a lot more in there, but this is what I got.

One, 1  Therefore, having been justified by faith,  we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, Romans 5:1

I have been justified by faith. A revolution in a short statement! This is what Paul tells in Romans, and in this chapter. But there is still more, we can now be at peace with God. We are at war with God when we don’t know Him. We can’t win it! But it is now over and we are at peace!

Two, 3  And not only this, but we also exult in our tribulations, knowing that tribulation brings about perseverance; 4 and perseverance, proven character; and proven character, hope; 5 and hope does not disappoint, because the love of God has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us. Romans 5:3-5

Hold on! We still have tribulation in this world. Yes, we do. But we can rest knowing that not only will it come to an end, but we will become better people for it. Now that the war is over, we have hope. This is an eternal hope, one without disappointment. It is a hope based on God’s love for us.

Three, 6 For while we were still helpless, at the right time Christ died for the ungodly. Romans 5:6

God know us well, He know all parts of us (Psalm 139). Therefore, he knows when the time is right for our salvation. This refers not only to Jesus being born at just the right time according to the prophets, Isaiah 53, Isaiah 7:13-15, Matt 1:22-23, but that He reveals Himself to each of us in a way and at a time we can respond. What does this mean? It means Jesus pursues you! We cannot go looking for Him first. God takes the first step!

Four, 10 For if while we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved  by His life. Romans 5:10

Another idea that contradicts all we think we know about God-until we finally do know Him. While we hate and disobey God, He still sends Jesus to the world, and to each one of us. No one is beyond the love of God, no one is too far gone to be saved!

Five, 21 so that, as sin reigned in death, even so grace would reign through righteousness to eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 5:21

See Romans 5:12-14. Even though we were under the control of sin grace reigns through righteousness (which is what we are, based on faith), so that the eternal life Jesus offers us can be had. The grace of God is without measure or end. It reaches each of us no matter what. That is why the song is name “Amazing Grace…”. His grace is truly amazing!

This sums all this up. We are saved by grace through faith (Ephesians 2:8-9). In fact I know that I have been justified by faith. And you are too! But we don’t start out that way. We are helpless before God, and we are, in fact, His enemies. None of this stops God from loving and pursuing us. If that is how God treats us, we should treat people the same way: with love and grace.

This is not an in-depth study of this chapter but is what I learned from it. We must can now be at peace with God. If we do so, if we allow God to end our war with Him, we become a new people, a people who can spread the message of the gospel-the love and mercy of God. And that is good news!
